Nokia’s support for the Mac platform is paltry - everything seems to rely on an installation of Nokia Suite which is PC only. Apple’s iSync steps in to synchronise contacts and calendar entries between the two but sms messages are seemingly stored on the phone forever.
Having nearly two thousand messages was seriously slowing down the Nokia so I was delighted to find an app which installs on the 9300i and allows intelligent sorting and export using a variety of transports.
I simply downloaded, installed on the phone (using the phone - not Nokia’s Suite), selected all messages in the Inbox and exported a csv file using bluetooth. From previous (PC based) exploits it’s important to choose a field delimiter that isn’t likely to be present in the body of a message, else you’ll end up with lots of tweaking required in the resultant spreadsheet. I chose the tilde “~” as being an unlikely content character buit still ended up with a bit of pruning - next time I’ll try a Euro symbol of something. I repeated the process on my Sent items and deleted all the messages off the phone after having double checked the result.
Unfortunately the app is neither free, nor open source but a very reasonable $9.95 with a 15 day trial. Download Best MessageStorer yourself from www.smartphoneware.com
